Ashland Evans

Ruth Tucker Evans

Born in 1916, Ruth Evans was a registered nurse who served as a captain in the Army Nurses Corps. After the war, she met and married her husband Dr. William Evans in 1947. Together they raised two daughters and moved to Ashland in 1998 where Ruth established a music scholarship at Southern Oregon University as well as several other funds to support local projects she cared about.

Mrs. Evans' proudest philanthropic accomplishment came after her husband's death in 2002 when she established the William G. and Ruth T. Evans Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund. Since its creation, 344 scholarships totaling more than $963,600 have been awarded to 277 nursing students. When Ruth passed away in 2013, a bequest was made to the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation of over $2.5 million, the largest contribution received in the foundation's history.

The Evans' bequest helps lessen the financial burden for qualified nursing students enrolled at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) at the Ashland Campus and at Rogue Community College (RCC), and who intend to work in the Rogue Valley after graduation. It also covers the state licensing fees for students graduating from the RCC Licensed Practical Nursing Program. Ruth's bequest also benefitted critical financial support for uninsured and under-insured patients. Additionally, the generosity of Ruth T. Evans supported the creation of the Evans Family Comfort Room at Asante Ashland Community Hospital. The Comfort Room provides end of life patients and their families with a home like experience, proof that the kindness and generosity of one can touch the lives of many.
